Japan born and raised violinist, Yuhka Nagai and
NZ raised Kent Isomura present a program including two NZ premier Japanese pieces,A. Mozart and R. Schumann.
Six pieces by Hikaru Hayashi(1931-2012) and
Nursery song by Rikuya Terashima(1964-) from Amami are related to Okinawan folk music. Okinawa is located in the South of Japan, warmest and slow pace of lifestyle. Yuhka was incredibly lucky to
get these two Japanese pieces from Japanese pianist and composer, Rikuya Terashima. Opéra is something special for Hikaru Hayashi and he composed many Japanese operas and they are still performed
in his Opéra theatre Konnyakuza in Tokyo, Japan.
Traveling from Japan to Europe, they also play
Rondo K.269/261 by W.A.Mozart and Violin Sonata No.1 by R.Schumann. Mozart Rondo K.269/261 was most likely composed for A. Brunetti and written in the time he wrote a lot of music for violin
including his famous 5 violin concertos between 1773 and 1777. It was possibly a replacement of finale for his violin concerto No.1, K.207. R. Schumann’s 1st violin Sonata is
dramatic and has his expressions of unstable emotions and the depth of energy.

A global gathering of Pasefika opera greats, song, storytelling and movement.
Immigrants to Aotearoa from the Pacific Islands in the 1950s, ’60s and ’70s had all sorts of dreams for their families – but being an opera singer wasn’t one of them. Today, Pasefika
opera voices are heard around the globe.
The O.Gs is a concert in motion celebrating the first wave, a veritable who’s who, of Pasefika opera singers. These virtuosos have sung all over the world, and for this once in
a lifetime event, are coming home to sing and share their stories with you.
Each has a different story. All have the same story. Celebrate the triumphs and learn about the challenges faced by these pioneering wave makers as they take us on a journey from the
music of their islands to Bellini, Mozart, Verdi, Strauss, Gershwin, Sondheim and more. With choir and orchestra.

The music from the greatest soundtrack of a generation. Baz Luhrmann's Romeo + Juliet performed live in concert (in its entirety) by Gin Wigmore, Jon Toogood, Dave Gibson, Milan
Borich, Laughton Kora and soprano Isabella Moore, supported by a 30-piece orchestra, choir and rock band.
If you lived within earshot of the pop culture zeitgeist in 1996, you remember the greatest love story of all time grabbing hold of the radio airwaves and squeezing like a sweet
teen crush.
The magic of Baz Luhrmann's Romeo + Juliet was recasting Shakespeare's timeless romantic tragedy in the heady rush of mid-'90s cool, with a soundtrack blending grunge, dance,
classical, opera and dawning girl power into a record-breaking chart phenomenon.
From Radiohead to Everclear, Cardigan's Love Fool to Garbage's #1 Crush; from the mirror ball ecstasy of Young Hearts Run Free to the aching gravitas of When Doves Cry and O
Verona - get ready to relive the soundtrack of a generation (Volumes 1 & 2) with a cast of star performers radiating a combined chemistry as potent as the young Claire Danes
and Leonardo DiCaprio.
For two nights only at The Civic, experience the epic pop grandeur of Gin Wigmore, Jon Toogood (Shihad), Laughton Kora, Milan Borich (Pluto), Dave Gibson (Elemeno P) and acclaimed
soprano Isabella Moore backed by a 30-piece orchestra, full choir and rock band, as this freak NZ #1 phenomenon is reborn with all due rock-dance-operatic-orchestral drama.
Don’t forget to dress for hedonistic success: masks, wings, chain mail, or anything else that takes you back to a Capulet house party circa '96.

In an enchanted realm a
young warrior searches for her father before the darkness consumes him. Fighting back the shadows, she is pushed to the limits of her bravery. In the darkest hour, we all fear the
morning might not arrive...
While our hero searches
in the darkness, encountering magical creatures and a dazzling display of cirque artistry, the orchestra sets the scene. From the subtle drama of Handel’s beautiful Sarabande, to Respighi’s quirky portrait of ‘The Nightingale’ and meeting the new day with the most famous sunrise ever set to music, Grieg’s shimmering
‘Morning Mood’ from Peer Gynt.

CoplandQuiet City Weber Clarinet Concerto No.1 Shostakovich Symphony No.5
Shostakovich’s most popular
symphony is a two-edged work. On one hand, it’s immediately accessible, with a devastating slow movement and an exhilarating conclusion. It is also, however, an anguished hymn to the Soviet
Russia which brought it forth.
In contrast is Copland’s calm, warm
music for the reflective combination of trumpet, cor anglais and strings.
The clarinet, that instrument both
dulcet and playful, is rarely as charming as it is in Weber’s delightful concerto. Played by Andreas Ottensamer, Principal Clarinet of the Berlin Philharmonic, this is not to be
missed.

Vaughan Williams The Lark Ascending Ross HarrisFace (world premiere)* Elgar 'Enigma' Variations
Noodling on the piano one evening, Elgar came up with a theme, hitting on the idea of writing variations, each affectionately depicting one of his friends. They have gone on to become one of the
most adored pieces of English music, second only perhaps to Vaughan Williams’ wistful, quietly ecstatic song of arcadia.
Between these two favourites is a new commission from Ross Harris. Face is inspired by the story of Sir Harold Gillies, the New Zealander who became the father of plastic surgery through his
pioneering work treating the disfiguring facial injuries sustained by soldiers during the First World War. This multimedia work also includes visuals by Tim Gruchy, based on an original artwork
by Barry Cleavin.

Then a highlight of the season, the absolutely sensational French pianist Jean-Efflam Bavouzet. For his much-anticipated return to Auckland, he’s playing Beethoven’s grandest and most monumental

Tchaikovsky’s tempestuous Fifth Symphony is an equally tremendous work. With emotion at its most raw and music at its most passionate, it’s the perfect start to a year of concert-going.
